Clinical micro biology is a multi disciplinary unit comprising of Immunology, Parasitology, Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology myco Bacteriology and Entomology. The department is equipped with adequate Academic Resources, Spacious Lecture Halls, Museum and Laboratory and department library.

The department of Microbiology caters to the diagnostic needs of RajaRajeswari Super Specialty Hospital in addition to carrying out teaching programmes and research activities. Over 40,000 microbiological investigations are carried out annually in different sections of the department namely Bacteriology, Serology, Immunology, Parasitology, Mycology & Virology. On an average about 120 specimens are received per day. The main work in the clinical Microbiology laboratory centers around staining, hanging drop preparation, culture isolation, bio- typing of species, susceptibility testing for antibiotics etc. This in-turn helps in diagnosis, control and prevention of infectious diseases etc.

All the investigations for common infectious diseases like culture and sensitivity of urine, pus, including HIV, HBsAg and fungal cultures are carried out. Periodic bacteriological monitoring of operation theaters are carried out with modern methods of air sampling and standard procedures. The Micro Biology department works in co- ordination with other departments in implementation of certain national health programmes like RNTCP (for Tuberculosis,) NLEP (for Leprosy) and ICTC (for HIV) the department is in the process of further acquiring facilities like fluorescent microscope, BACTEC, BACTALERT, FLOWCYTOMETRY, PCR, etc....

Antibiotic sensitivity testing for all isolates are carried out with the latest antibiotics as per the guidelines of national committee for clinical laboratory Standard (NCCLS). Also the internal quality control is maintained as per the standard methodology and state-of-the-art facilities.

The department is having experienced and qualified faculty ably supported by non-teaching staff .i.e. Technical and attenders. The department has got all the infrastructural facilities like accommodation, instruments, Museum, Research Laboratory, library as per the MCI requirement.

We have a spacious museum with different models of viruses. There are colour charts of different lifecycles of parasites, bacteriology charts and photos. That apart we an excellent collection exam slides.
