Blood Bank | Rajarajeswari hospital

The blood bank at RajaRajeswari Hospital spanning over 600 sq. mts houses all the groups of blood. It is licensed and well equipped with refrigerators, hemomixer, haemosealers, needle destroyer, ELISA reader, printer, VDRL, shaker, incubator, tridot kits, hepacards.

The donor room is comfortably furnished to facilitate the donors with ample comfort while they donate blood. Every donor's record is maintained by the department.

The sterilization room is equipped with autoclave and hot air oven to sterilize the equipments before use.

Blood Donor - Eligibility:

Following are the parameters that ought to be looked into before a person is allowed to donate blood:

  • Age: Between 15 to 55 years
  • Weight: Above 45 kgs
  • Body Temperature: Below 37.5 °C (99.6 ° F)
  • Pulse Rate: Between 60 to 100 beats/minute
  • Blood Pressure: Systolic: 110-140mm Hg and Diastolic: 70-90mm Hg
  • Skin Lesions: The skin at site of venepuncture should not have skin lesions (damaged tissue on the skin) and needle pricks
  • Donation Frequency: 12 weeks for males and 16 weeks for females
  • Haemoglobin level: Not below 12.5 g/dl and
  • Without acute respiratory illness

Cause and period of Deferral when donor suffers from Illness/Disease/Condition:

7 Minor Illness (Chicken Pox, Mumps, Measles, Recipient of Blood/Blood Components, Skin Graft, Tattooing, Ear/Nose Piercing & Abortion 6 months
8 H/O Hepatitis in family member or close contact, Typhoid, Severe Illness, Major Surgery, After Delivery, Rabies Vaccine, Recipient of  Immunoglobulin 1 year
9 Malaria 2 years
10 Jaundice (except if HBsAg is negative) 5 years

(such cases will be admitted or rejected upon evaluation by the Blood Bank physician)
